Prof Vuyisile Msila is one of the leading scholars whose research continues to grow

His academic background is Curriculum Theory and Teaching as well as Education Leadership and Management. He also has an interest in Politics of Education, Change Management, Africanisation and African higher education. He is currently rated C2 by the National Research Foundation (NRF) – C2 means that all of the reviewers are firmly convinced that the applicant is an established researcher as described.

In 2013, he was the recipient of the coveted Chancellor’s Prize for Research at the University of South Africa (UNISA). Additionally, in 2004 he was part of the National Professional Diploma in Education (NPDE) Team that won Excellence in Tuition Award for materials development at UNISA.  Msila was also a Fulbright Fellow at Michigan State University in 1999 where he completed a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum Theory and Teaching. His other qualifications include Master of Philosophy in Conflict Management and Transformation, Master of Education in Education Management as well as a Doctoral degree in Education Management.

Msila has served in several  boards and these include,  Film and Publications Board, He was also a member of Council of the Luthuli Museum and is currently an adjudicator in the South African Literary Awards (SALA) for English fiction and non-fiction categories, a function he has performed  since 2016. His teaching career started  in the Eastern Cape as a schoolteacher – at DS Petana Secondary in Kirkwood (now known as Moses Mabhida). He then worked at  Mzontsundu Secondary in Kwazakhele and finally at Thubelihle Secondary school in New Brighton. He taught English and History to mainly grade 12 classes. After his career as a schoolteacher he joined the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in the Eastern Cape as an administrator in the Department of Youth Affairs. In 2003 he was appointed at UNISA as a Coordinator in the. After UNISA he was appointed at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Gqeberha as a Senior lecturer before taking an Associate Professorhip at the University of Johannesburg. He was then appointed full professor at UNISA – Education Leadership and Management in 2012. His research interests are multidisciplinary, and he has published in numerousareas of research. Currently, he has about 100 articles in various local and international journals.

A prolific columnist and a thought leader whose opinion pieces frequently appear in Independent newspapers including, The Star, Pretoria News, Sunday Tribune and Sunday Independent. He has also featured in Mail and Guardian and Sunday World.
